Kentucky used to be the land of four seasons, but the last few years, it’s felt like two seasons: winter and summer. Fall starts in a couple days, but summer weather will probably stick around for a while, even as the sunlight decreases.

Kentucky is also a great place to explore the outdoors. We have many natural features in our area, especially bodies of water and a forest.

Kentucky is home to Ale-8-One, a drink made and bottled in Winchester. The company announced a campaign recently to encourage preservation: It’s Our Bluegrass. Make It Last. The campaign is to support the Red River Gorge — “a haven for hikers, bikers, climbers and paddlers”  — and Kentucky outdoors.

Dawson Springs and Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park is also a place for those who like to hike, bike and paddle. This is a great chance for us to promote our region, which is often overlooked.

To participate, you can buy Ale-8-One products. The company will give back 1 percent of sales to help preserve Kentucky’s beautiful areas. Food Giant sells regular ginger Ale-8-One in a six-pack and also individual bottles. You can check out Cheryl’s Gift Shop at 401 E. Arcadia Ave. to try the new cherry flavor. It’s awesome! She has them in six-packs.

Another way to participate is to enter a video into a contest. Videos should be 8 seconds long and showcase the outdoors of Kentucky. Make sure to use the hashtag #ItsOurBluegrass. The company will donate $8 for each of the first 125 videos posted on Ale-8’s Facebook page.

The video contest has already begun and the company will choose a winner each week to win an adventurous prize pack. Go exploring!
