Madisonville-North Hopkins starting five took care of business Monday in the opening game of the 7th District Tournament against Dawson Springs, jumping out to a 26-4 lead on the way to a 65-27 win.
“I said go play hard, do what we’re supposed to do, like good teams are supposed to do and play basketball,” Madisonville coach Jeff Duvall said. “They did that for the most part. We had a few lapses on defense.”
The Lady Maroons scored the first eight points of the game with Riley Sword getting them on the board, Destiny Whitsell adding a basket and Kailey Barber knocking down a three-pointer. One-of-two free throws by SaNya Carney made it 8-0 Madisonville less than two minutes into the game.
Dawson Springs’ Emmalynn Colson got the Lady Panthers on the board before an 11-0 run by the Lady Maroons. Madisonville’s Bryanne Johnson scored to open the run and to close it with the Lady Maroons in front 19-2. Barber added another three during the run and Sword and Whitsell both added a basket.
Kimberly Hoover ended the run knocking down a pair of free throws for the Lady Panthers to make it 19-4. After baskets by Whitsell and Sword, Johnson knocked down a three-pointer to give the Lady Maroons a 26-4 lead after the first quarter.
Kristina Western scored seven of her team-high 10 points in the second period as the Lady Maroons took a 45-10 lead into the half. Bailey Bryant added three points in the second period as did Taylor Nelson with an and-one and Kaytee Parish with a three-pointer.
Sword finished with nine points, Nelson had eight, and Johnson seven. Whitsell and Barber finished with six points apiece, Bryant had five and Parish four. Briniyah Dulin also had four for the Lady Maroons, while Lily Coffman added three and Sadie Kirk two.
“We got everybody in the game,” Duvall said. “When you look out there the fourth quarter and we’ve got three seventh and two eighth-graders, that’s pretty good to put out there.”
Madisonville (15-12) will play Hopkins County Central at 6 p.m. Thursday in a rematch of last season’s 7th District Championship.
“We’re going to come in focused,” Duvall said. “The effort wasn’t 100% tonight, focused on a district championship, but we put ourselves in that position to go to the regional tournament, and I was proud of them for that.”
